Music:naghtmares demo

i went and saw underdog last night and it was pretty intense. it was at rockettown. it was the first time (and likely the last) that i have paid money and gone to a show there. i felt like quite a hypocrite, but thats another story. i think i was the oldest person in the room that wasnt in a band. other than yeah right! i wasnt really interested in the rest of the line up. i've never been a huge underdog fan. i mean, i like a lot of their stuff, but theyve never been a band i would listen to a whole lot. last night was not what i had expected. it was a bunch of full blown adult dudes who loved playing music together. they skated before the show and they were really stoked to be playing shows. these guys who should be old and jaded were showing all of us up. theyre at the age where they should have long ago sold off their record collection. they should be in minivans instead of tour vans. but something about it was very real. it wasnt like the weak disappointments when i saw the misfits in 1997 or dri last year. it wasnt like old out of touch dudes doing it for the money. it wasnt like seeing a band who cant give up their youth or are past their prime and unprepared for adulthood. it was more like seeing 18 year old kids in their first band who just happened to be fourty. they were as excited as the kids dogpiling for the singalongs.

i can go ahead and promise you that wont be me at fourty. i assumed that i would be done with punk by the time i was 18 or 19.

tour was cool. it was strange to be at the milestone. i hadnt been there since the summer after high school. aside from a 3 yr period that it was closed, the milestone has been the underground club in charlotte nc for 30 years. bands like bad brains, black flag, REM, dead kennedys, archers of loaf, melvins, antiseen, green day, jawbreaker and 30 different bands that i went to high school with have all played there. i think nirvana played there on the bleach tour (or so i have heard.... i would have been 9, so i just have to take people's word for it.) its wierd to think about the fact that without that place, i may have never known that there was anything but the music on the radio. then my first time back since leaving that terrible town, i return with a band who is expectd to spend most of the next year on mtv's trl. you would have never been able to convince the 18 yr old pj who left charlotte 8 years ago of that. i guess that's why it felt so strange to me. i felt like i was betraying the building or something just by being there.

nothing too memorable has happened on tour. i got a bunch of records i had been looking for. jon & bob got thrown in the slammer after drinking on the streets in atlanta. 8 hours in a halding cell & a few "drop the soap" later, the ordeal was over. i saw howell evans, dave, "backside" bob squire (he hates it when you call him that), and zach in memphis. its always good to see any of those dudes. the singer of lucero left durring the pink spider's second song. saw steve savage in atlanta. evidently steve only smokes weed & works now. he had been smoking for 6 hours when i saw him. first thing he did back stage was fire up a bowl and start talking about the religious expierience of seeing dinosaur jr's original line-up. he is officially a stoner. i saw a few people i vaguely knew in charlott, but it wasnt like i still talk to anyone there. charlotte mostly just reminded why i neveer go back.

i couldnt check my email much. i am going to buy a laptop as soon as i decide what i want. it was hilarious to me that the milestone had wireless. even krystal has wireless now. it was hard to keep up with the news, the pennant races & communicate with people back home. its strange how quickly our society has become reliant on the internet & computers in general. you dont really realize it until its taken away.
i also need one of the $400 ipods. the hand held video poker can only keep your attention on the road for so long. plus within 3 to 5 hands i am usually up $5000. it would be a lot more fun if the computer was good at poker. i mean, i am by no means a poker expert. i learned how to play in 5th grade, but have never been a regular player. and i watch poker on tv when i am really hard up for something to do.

i am in town til the 12th. then sporadic dates til the 21st. then i will be home for 2 weeks. i am trying to get a job part time for a non-profit, if anyone can suggest anything. below are the dates i will be gone. i would love to hang out with anyone on the dates i am here, as i have very little to do. barnburner is playing the huntsville show. it will be with thomas functions & a vintriliquist (not a band called "a vintriliquist", like a dude with a dummy who pretends like its actually the puppet who is talking.)

randy "biscuit" turner died yesterday at his home in texas.

things like this dont normally bum me out, as i am a pretty insensitive person.

but for some reason when i heard last night that randy turner had died at age 49, it sincerely bummed me out.

Music:V/A - let them eat jellybeans

i leave in 1 week. if you want to see me, contact me before the 24th. i've been buying a lot of records, drinking a lot of coffee, and working as little as possible. saw last days last night. it was ok. not great, but not as bad as i ad heard. dont go into it thinking about it being a movie about nirvana or even a movie about mr cobain himself. its a movie about a smack addict who happens to look a lot like the guitar player in nirvana. evidently being addicted to H means:
- making food and not actually eating it
- changing clothes a lot
- not being able to annunciate words
- listening to the velvet underground a loy (i already knew that one)

try this... i couldnt do it:
How Smart Is Your Right Foot? This is so funny that it will boggle your mind. And you will keep trying it to see if you can outsmart your foot. But you can't!

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.
2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand.

Your foot will change direction!!!
And there is nothing you can do about it.

sorry i dont post much anymore, but you all know i really have nothing to say. i really dont even read any of your post anymore. this is the first time i have been on livejournal since my last post. even when i am around people i find i have fewer & fewer things to say. in roughly a month i will be on the road full time. hopefully i will get to see most of you & hang out before then.
anyway, my band is playing a show this weekend. we wanted a 3rd band but it didnt happen. you can download our demo from the link at the bottom (barnburner). its like 80s hardcore punk stuff. fast. i dont really know who we sound like. nora deniro is awesome but i am the only person who believes that. and i dont even smoke weed. jason mcdonald is in the band. he's an entertaining drunk & one of my truest friends.

NORA DENIRO (not to be confused with nadina das or de novo dahl)
BARNBURNER

also go see krum bums & damage case on sunday. theyre 2 texas bands that flat out annihillate. the krum bums are wild live. damage case is ex-spasm 151, so you know theyre going to be rowdy.
i just reread this... i didnt mean to come off like quite as much of a bummer. i just worked 9 hours in 100 degree heat, so i am a little beat right now. sorry.

went skating this week for the first time in a really long time. it felt good. i was by myself in a trashy parking lot behind a soon-to-be-closed bowling ally. it was 12:30 am. i am planning on doing this more often.

i am now back in the 21st century. i got a new phone. it takes pictures & has the internet. i can download sabbath ring tones. yesterday while i was in the can, i checked the royals score (i was pleasantly shocked that they beat baltimore 7-4. as tuff as the orials are and as bad as KC's been playing i didnt see that comming at all.) i ended up getting sprint. it makes sense because they had the most reasonable plan for me. plus my dad & all the members of wizard fist are on sprint. the rest of my family will be on sprint in 2 months when their at&t contract is up too. that way it will be free when my mom calls me to tell me something "important" about some far-removed family member that i scarcely remember meeting 12 years ago (as she has a tendency to do) or when bekah calls me to complain that she doesnt have enough pairs of pink shoes.

my phone doesnt work. the ear piece went out on saturday. it hasnt worked since. anyone who has been calling me can only leave messages and hope that i have another phone around to check those messages with, which i dont. the good people at cricket want $80 for me to get a new phone, so i am going to cancel my plan. i need a nationwide plan with no roaming starting in 2 months anyway. i am probably going to go with verizon. if any of you have suggestions, let me know as i know little about phone plans. anyway, so for those who have called me this week, youre not being ignored. i am just telephonicly handicapped.

so huntsville alabama is an incredible place. i never would have assumed that i would say that. it is my favorite place to play/go to a show/know that shows exist. over 200 kids paid to see the show. and by "kids" i mean people between the ages of 9 and 45. eyeryone there seemed to be into the music for the sake of being into the music. no attitude or drama. it reminded me of what i thought punk shows should be. the other 3 bands were awesome. annihilation time is the best band on the planet. one band reminded me of PIL & later joy division, but they did a sweet screamers cover. it was a blast. or in annihilation time's case, a "bl'ast!"

yeah - i know it wasnt funny.

i thought i blew out my cv joints & transmission in one motion. the transmission alone would be around $1200. i only need a car for 2 more months til i will be on the road all the time and have no use for you "car owners" and your solo transportation lifestyles. so instead of having to shell out nearly 2 grand for a car i paid that much for 3 years ago, i will only have to pay $285. evidently all it was was a broken axle. the cv joints came loose causing the axel to pop out - thus, caiusing the transmission to miss on all gears. i should have my car back klater today, assuming all goes well.

after being in NYC last weekend, i wanted to move there. i want to live where i dont need a car. i hate owning a car, but its a near necessity in nashville. new york is so expensive & i hated all the hipsters & the food was awful & i have never seen so many fake designer watches/purses/sunglasses/etc & i didnt even get to go anywhere cool & i hate the yankees & i hate yankees fans & i want to move to new york city. they have magic underground trains that dont even have smoke stacks. this simple southern boy was really impressed. all the servers & bar tenders in manhattan are the nicest people in the world. i talked to several of them. actually, they talked to me. they all were really personable. i was kind of caught off guard. new yorkers are pegged by most people as being jackasses. one even gave me a pep talk about something i was very concerned with in my life. i am not usually one to talk to strangers about personal issues, but it came up in conversation.

anyway, life is pretty good. there are bumps in the road, but everything is going well. starting in june, i will be on tour full time with the pink spiders. that will be my job. my only job. i will be gone most of the summer with them. we'll be with the pixies, the killers, weezer, the warped tour, the von bondies & maybe the hives (no not all at the same time). i am hoping that the warped tour dates will be on the part of the tour billy idol will be on. i do feel a little funny abot the whole thing, but when it comes down to it, i am being paid pretty well to hang out with bob fort.

i knew i should have taken louisville over wake to go to the final four... but i picked UNC & illinois... somehow it just isnt as cool when your only 2 picks to make it to the final four are the top ranking teams in their bracket. i think it wil be the tarheels & cardnals in the finals. being the diehard UNC fan, i really want to see them win it all. plus roy williams needs a ring.

in other news, i am heading to the big apple this weekend. i will be selling merchandise for geffen records recording artists, the pink spiders. i've ridden around with bands in vans before, but this is a bus. i will have my own bunk with a flip down screen with its own dvd player. if you're in/around these towns, get in contact and come hang out with me. you can come buy the the remainder of the 500 spat releases on pink vinyl before the big wigs at geffen put it to a halt and the LPs sell for $200 on ebay.

if you live in nashville - go see direct control tommorrow (tues). barnburner played with them last summer & it was awesome. they'll evidently have tour editions of their new 12". again, even if you dont like them, tour edition of a my war release = big dough on ebay. and isnt turning a huge profit on the popularity of a band what DIY hardcore has always been about?

2 updates in one day?????

so i went to the horror convention this weekend. ken foree (peter the chocolate man in the original dawn of the dead) kept wanting to talk to me about when he went to cbgb in 1977. i had an ac/dc shirt on & he got ac/dc & cbgb confused (that was the first clue that his story was full of holes). then he started talking about how he went to cbgb back when the sex pistols & blondie played there. the sex pistols never played there. then after talking about it for a minute, he admitted that he had only been there once & that he had no idea what was going on the whole time. but he said he had respect for "that whole punk thing".

if you're in a romero zombie film you dont have to fake interest in punk to impress me.
